The Castle Cave is part of the wide cave system of Budapest, and its history is very similar to the one of the Buda Castle Labyrinth. It too formed by force of the natural processes of the calcareous soil erosion under the influence of thermal springs. It was subsequently altered by the work of men.

Locals from the Buda Castle District turned it into a cellar-like structure, and during World War Two it was used to military purposes (as a shelter and storage room) by the Germans.

English and German speaking visitors might find it comfortable to learn guided tours are available in both of these languages.
